Onsite laboratory and Ultrasound at AIM Cancer Program
Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive test that helps doctors diagnose medical conditions, including breast cancer. It uses high-frequency sound waves to produce images of the body.
Imaging experts at the AIM Breast Cancer Program use ultrasound technology in conjunction with other imaging, such as Mammography to determine if abnormalities found in the breast are solid tumors.
What Can I Expect During a Breast Ultrasound?
An ultrasound lasts about 20 minutes.
During the procedure, a specially trained technologist will:
- Ask you to remove any clothing or jewelry above your waist.
- Apply gel to your breast so the ultrasound probe can easily conduct the sound waves that
produce the images. - Move the ultrasound probe over your breast. You may feel slight pressure as the ultrasound
probe passes over your breast, but it should not be painful.
Following the procedure, a radiologist will discuss your ultrasound. You can expect full results from your doctor within two business days.
Minimally Invasive Breast Biopsy at AIM Breast Cancer Program
If your mammogram or breast ultrasound shows a suspicious area in the breast tissue, you may need to have a minimally invasive breast biopsy.
What Can I Expect During a Minimally Invasive Breast Biopsy?
During the procedure, the radiologist:
- Makes one or more small incisions near the suspicious area of your breast
- Removes tissue samples
- Sends the breast biopsy tissue samples to a pathologist who examines it to determine if cancer
is present
