What Is Radiation Cancer Treatment?

Radiation Treatment at AIM Cancer Center

Radiation kills cancer cells by using high-energy waves to damage the DNA of the cancer cells. Your doctor may use it to shrink tumors to make surgery or chemo more effective. Depending on the type and stage of your cancer, radiation may be the only treatment you need. We will work with the rest of your care team to come up with the best treatment plan for you. We offer radiation treatment for all types of cancers, including:

  •  Breast
    Colon and rectal
    Head and neck

What Is Advance Radiation Cancer Treatment?

Alliance International Medical doctors use the latest technology to treat your cancer. Our experts direct high doses of radiation to your tumor with precision. This means less damage to the nearby healthy tissue, is vital when treating cancers in delicate parts of the body. By damaging the DNA of cancer cells, advanced radiation cancer treatment kills or slows down their growth. As damaged cells die, the body breaks them down and removes them. Our goal is to provide treatment while reducing side effects.

On-Board Imager® (OBI)* and Cone-Beam CT

On-Board Imager® (OBI) and Cone-Beam CT (CBCT) allow radiation oncologists to image your tumor right before and during your treatment. This ensures that you and the tumor are at the same position as originally planned. OBI produces 2D images and CBCT produces 3D images to localize the tumor and optimize the accuracy of your treatment. Both of these imaging technologies are part of image-guided radiotherapy and available at Alliance International Medical cancer center

Treatments fall into one of three main types:

  • Radiosurgery uses radiation instead of surgical tools to remove or destroy cancer. It is a noninvasive treatment that provides the same results as surgery.
  • External beam radiation therapy uses high-energy x-rays to send radiation to the tumor.
Treatment lasts a few minutes. Most people go for treatment 5 days a week over a few weeks.
  •  Internal beam radiation therapy also known as brachytherapy uses a radioactive “seed”
implanted close to the tumor. The seed gives off large doses of radiation. This approach means
less discomfort and fewer office visits.
